DEEP BLUE

                Raised in the countryside of Hong Kong, ARTHUR spent significant time sailing the coast around Sai Kung. Inspired by the depth and mystery of the near black abyss beneath his hull, DEEP BLUE is amalgamation of nostalgia towards rope and exploration of its many properties. Surrounding a stabilising wood core is wrapped approximately 200m of sailing rope, heated and manipulated into textures reminiscent of out-of-reach shapes lurking just beneath the surface.

          As the rope is the central theme, the plywood core is purposely too unstable to support a person. By then melting individually cut 5cm tufts of rope onto it, the joints and beams are reinforced by a layer of hardened plastic, strong enough to lend the chair actual functionality.

          The seat, on the other hand, has no integrated reinforcement and is made entirely of those same tufts. Melted together at the base using large triangular aluminium moulds, each of the five segments attains enough rigidity to hold ones body weight while retaining enough flexibility to be comfortable. Each segment is then “glued” together using more melted rope, resulting in thick textured “welds” that are visible from the back.
