BUOY 303

            Created as a homage to the dilapidated buoys in the harbour of Hong Kong, ‘Buoy 303’ explores the beauty of ageing in nautical infrastructure. The sculptural furniture piece references the forms of propellers, buoys, and other hard-working items found in maritime settings that often go underappreciated. Paying respect to the rust and corrosion that comes with years of service, the ARTHUR HAINZ applied different treatments to the metal surface of the object to mimic the effects of saltwater over time. When sat on, the furniture gently rocks to capture the motion of waves, allowing for contemplation on the vital role that such items play out at sea over their lifetimes.

”I wanted give some well deserved and long overdue respect to these massive steel structures that serve us day in and day out. Ships, docks, containers, buoys, all of these hulking objects are so often removed from the public view, tucked away so their industrial aesthetic doesn’t need to be seen. Why is it that nearly every culture has an expectation of respect and reverance for those older than ourselves, yet when such vital parts of a functioning society display wrinkles in the form of rust we look away? My past Optimist dinghy of sail number 303 once allowed me to see this world up close, a favor I’ll never forget”
